Artificial Intelligence in Industrial Vision: Beyond the Trend

My name is Mario Brumini, I’m Advanced Technologies & AI Specialist at Dimac and in my work I am concerned with finding efficient solutions for the 100% inspection and sorting of fasteners and metal parts.
When people talk about artificial intelligence in industrial vision, the discussion often becomes too generic. In practice, the real value of AI does not come from following a trend, but from knowing exactly where it makes sense and where it does not.

This is the approach that I bring to the development of vision solutions at Dimac. My work starts from the inspection problem itself: the defect to detect, the variability of the part, the production speed, the required reliability, and the real operating conditions on the sorting machine.

Only after that comes the choice of technology. In many cases, traditional machine vision remains the best solution. In others, AI becomes essential, especially when defects are too variable, too subtle or too dependent on appearance to be described by fixed rules alone.

For this reason, the approach is not tied to a single tool or model. Depending on the application, I may use structured vision pipelines or advanced neural‑network‑based methods for classification and analysis, always selecting the most effective strategy for the specific inspection challenge.

What matters is not the label of the technology, but the ability to turn it into a robust industrial solution.

In a real production environment, the goal is not simply to detect more defects, but to achieve stability, repeatability, manageable training, maintainability, and reliable integration with the machine.

This practical vision reflects a broader idea behind the new generation of Dimac SPC systems and sorting machines: artificial intelligence should not be treated as a slogan, but as a concrete engineering tool. When applied with experience and technical judgement, AI is not an extra layer of complexity. It becomes a real advantage for quality control.

In conclusion, AI should not be viewed as a magic wand that solves everything, but rather as an indispensable tool for improving the efficiency and accuracy of fastener inspection.

Thanks to its ability to analyze large amounts of data and identify patterns invisible to the human eye, it can reduce errors, increase inspection speed, and optimize production processes. However, for it to be truly effective, constant refinement of models and datasets is necessary – a task I have been pursuing for several years and will continue to develop in the future.

As technology advances, the role of AI will become increasingly central, but human input will remain essential for interpreting results and making strategic decisions.
